What reviewers say

Common ground

Both fans and detractors agree the show is a divisive hybrid of live-action and CGI that tries to continue the original with mixed execution and a less threatening XANA.

Fans praised

  • Live-action amplifies the contrast between the real world and Lyoko more than the original's animation
  • CGI and virtual world action look good, with improved detail over the original series
  • New antagonist Tyron is played out well, though introduced late

Detractors panned

  • Live-action acting is poor, with actors looking like they barely try and characters miscast
  • Specters walk slowly and aren't threatening, undercutting XANA's menace
  • Plot is inconsistent, with repetitive character writing and a cliffhanger ending

What stands out

Effects and spectacle60

CGI and virtual world look better and more detailed, but character designs (e.g., William's hair) and towers draw mixed reactions

Atmosphere45

Live-action grounds the real world, but virtual world looks more like Tron, dividing opinion

Originality40

Reviving XANA and adding Tyron feels derivative; live-action/CGI mix is ambitious but not fresh enough

Plot and storyDivisive35

Inconsistent and ignores source material; code-stealing premise works on paper but falls flat in execution, ending on a cliffhanger

ActingDivisive30

Mixed; some actors fit roles (William, Jim, Laura), but Aelita and Yumi feel flat or grouchy, and many say effort is lacking

CharactersDivisive30

Repetitive writing, Aelita's role downplayed, and character designs criticized; new Laura seen as unnecessary (a female Jeremy)

Pacing30

Slow specter chases and dragged episodes; few set pieces land

TensionDivisive25

XANA is less threatening; specters are non-scary and slow, lacking the original's intimidation
